Unified HKUST, Complementary Campuses
With its official opening on 1 September 2022, HKUST(GZ) is the first Chinese mainland-Hong Kong cooperatively run university with independent legal status established since the release of the Outline Development Plan of the Central Government and the State Council for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
HKUST(GZ) is the realization of HKUST’s ambition to transform education for the future, with its cross-disciplinary academic structure designed to complement the well-established disciplinary foundation at the Clear Water Bay campus. HKUST(GZ) is positioned to strengthen knowledge transfer to bridge Hong Kong’s gap in high-tech manufacturing through the strong mainland supply chain network.
HKUST(GZ) aims to serve as a role model of the mainland-Hong Kong integrated educational development and become a world-famous high-level university, endeavoring to nurture future-oriented, high-end leaders of the academia and industry who are committed to the common good of humankind.
Under the Unified HKUST-Complementary Campuses umbrella, academic structures and degree programs are differentiated, the overall infrastructures substantially enlarged and updated, and courses and central research facilities open to students and researchers both ways. Even though the two campuses are of separate legal entities and financial frameworks, faculty are encouraged and supported to collaborate and co-supervise students, and students will have opportunities to pursue degrees offered by both campuses. This way, members of both campuses will freely choose their research topics and related studies with University’s overall enlarged scope, with more flexibility and better support. Accordingly, HKUST will further strengthen its role as a globally leading institution, and our faculty and students will find an encouraging atmosphere for their passions and interests to better develop their potential.
In terms of governance, the supreme governing body of HKUST(GZ) is the Governing Board which oversees the decision-making of the strategic development, institutional policies, and academic direction of the Guangzhou campus. It exercises the powers and duties as specified in the “HKUST(GZ) Charter”. The Governing Board consists of 17 members, among which, 8 members are appointed by Guangzhou University, 8 members are appointed by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and 1 member is appointed by the People’s Government of Guangdong Province or the Department of Education of Guangdong Province, the President of HKUST serves as the Chairperson of the Governing Board.
As the Co-Secretariat of the Governing Board of HKUST(GZ), the Office of Mainland Affairs (OMA) plays a pivotal role in cross-campus coordination, including supporting the daily operations of the Governing Board, facilitates cross-campus communication, and ensures the effective implementation of governance decisions.
